Summary
To establish a specialist unit at the University of Guayaquil to develop local expertise in marine invertebrate taxonomy and analysis of benthic ecology. Marine benthic habitats on various parts of Ecuador’s coastline are relatively understudied although they contain a rich diversity of invertebrate fauna. A greater understanding of their ecological importance is required especially since some areas are undergoing stress from habitat alteration by aquaculture, fishery and industrial pressures. Through collaborative training, this project aims to establish a specialist unit at the University of Guayaquil to develop local expertise in marine invertebrate taxonomy and analysis of benthic ecology and to provide data to feed into effective coastal resource management measures.
